We know that many of you are keen walkers and that you would like to see more walks on the calendar. We want to address this issue and offer a wider range of walks for you.

I have also received some feedback from a few members who are asking why there is a charge for walks. We are aware that the charge that we make may need some explaining...

This is very simple, the charge that Zest makes for members to go on walks is made purely to cover our costs. We have to plan, practise and then lead the walk and further costs are incurred with our vehicle expenses, insurance costs, internet banking charges, maps or guide books, etc. We do try to keep the charges to a minimum and currently the walks have ranged from £3 to £6 depending on the location and length of the walk.

We have thought long and hard about this issue and propose a solution... that members take it in turns to lead walks themselves and consequently all walks would be FREE!

Many of you have said in the past that you would be willing to lead a walk and we are looking for volunteers to be added to a bank of volunteer walk leaders so that we can organise and publish new walks on the website.

If enough people are willing to do this it would hopefully mean  a greater variety of walks and more people going on them.

If you would be willing to plan and lead a walk or if you would like to comment on this idea, please post a message below.

Hiya Lisa

I would be interested in leading an easy walk/bike ride suitable for families if anyone is interested (nothing too heavy and involving a pub lunch en-route of course and  bike hire!!)

I have a huge book here with 365 walks and bike rides with a pub involved if you are interested in borrowing it too (it has maps in it).

Perhaps when we next meet up we could have a look through the book and pick something out.

Hope this helps.:D

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for the offer - that's great! How about choosing an easy walk (involving a pub of course) for the 8th March? We have a space on the calendar for a walk then - if you're not busy that day I would really appreciate it...

Paul and Ian have also volunteered to lead some walks - and I'm sure that Carole said that she would be willing to lead one too...

This is a little experiment - if it works out with you guys offering to lead walks, it will be great (and cheaper!) for everyone!

Please let me know about the 8th March.

Hi Lisa,

I could lead a local walk sometime. I was thinking of along St Annes coast. Starting at the Pier and heading up and around Fairhaven Lake. Or we could make the walk  longer by going up to Lytham Windmill. Then afterwards we could go to a nice pub for a meal. I'm thinking particular of The Sandhills in St Annes Square which I've heard is very good. Salters' Wharf is also a good bet.

I also have a couple of excellent books on walks - one on the Lake District and one of Lancashire walks if Melissa or anyone wants to look at these when we meet up at an event.

Ahh Fairhaven Lake one of my favourite spots not been to for years!!  Do they still have the cafe in the railway carriage and the trampolines near there??

No probs Lisa with the 8th March so far but might be just my luck I complete on the new house that week lol - arghhh.:?

I'm sure we could organise a walk sometime, although we do tend to get lost in fog quite often - but that'll add a little bit of excitement to the day!

It would have to be something fairly big in the Lakes, and it might be better waiting until the weather is a bit better (and the snow has gone).

When are the 3 peaks team starting their training (Paul)??

Yes I think we should take Lisa up on her kind offer. In mine opinion charging people to walk in the British country side paints an unfair negative picture of the 'club', especially if it is the first event a new member attends.

Therefore, I am more than happy to be 'volunteer walk leader'.

Sure

In the mean time

I am not too sure what sort of walks people what to do. Therefore I have come up with a crude/quick questionnaire to help pick a good walk that most people will enjoy. Thus can I kindly ask for those interested to fill in the questionnaire it will take less than 30 seconds of your time.

It can be found here:

or

Thanks

Hi Adam,

When I completed the questionnaire it changed my walk range from 5-10 miles to 10-20 miles - nooooooooo!  For benefit of others, this would be my max range on an occasional basis, but gentler walks under 5 miles would be better for me on a more frequent basis with my decrepit hip!  (Which is why I'm reluctant to put myself forward a a leader, until I've got the hip sorted out.)

Well done for doing this Adam!  :dude:

Dear All

I am thinking of planing a walk in the Forest of Bowland. Its just under 10.0 miles and starts at 53.955574N 2.562284W. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=53.955574N%202.562284W I reckon the 1st March looks like a good day.

Details of which can be found here http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walks/walk_b/1218/.

Because I am a sad beggar and get board at lunch times and Sunday mornings I have gone a bit over board on analysing the results. For those interested I have posted them at http://www.adampetrus.com/zest/walkingresults.page
Thanks

Any interest or objections?

Adam

Dear ALL

After chatting with Lisa, 6th April seems a better day. I am probably going try this walk this weekend myself just so I know where I am going etc.

Thanks Adam

Hi,

On an evening walk tip, what do you think of the idea of walking around Walton-le-Dale, by the river and the parks and nature reserves outside of Preston when the weather is lighter? Maybe a quick meal afterwards as well?

Steve
